March is the greatest time of the year. As much as I love gathering information on every team throughout the regular season there’s nothing quite like going to the Class B state girls tournament. Eight North Dakota towns close up shop and there’s not a soul to be seen. The support people show for this state tournament is tremendous. It’s been eight years since Grafton won its first and only state championship over Linton-HMB 76-54. The word that comes to mind is domination when you compare this season to the Spoilers 2011-12 state championship season. Grafton’s average margin of victory in this year’s Region 2 tournament was 31.3 points and they won the title game over Thompson by 20 points. Kelsey Mischel didn’t want to end her senior season on Feb. 27 against Flasher in the Region 5 championship game. When her team trailed by 10 at halftime it wasn’t looking great. Fast-forward to the final seconds of the contest and Shiloh Christian fans were storming the court after Mischel knocked down a last second 3-pointer that lifted the Skyhawks over Flasher 61-60. read more
